CURODONT®

Drill-Free Care for Early Cavities in Warren, OH

NO DRILL, NO NEEDLE, NO FILLING

Treating a cavity while it is still small

Tooth decay starts as a weakened patch under the surface of the enamel, well before there is a hole. For a long time the choices at that stage were fluoride and waiting: watch the spot, and fill it once it broke through.

Curodont® Repair Fluoride Plus gives us something to do in between. It is a liquid we apply to the early cavity. It soaks into the weakened enamel and forms a fine scaffold there, and minerals from your own saliva build up on that scaffold to help rebuild the enamel from the inside. There is no drilling, no needle and no filling material, and it does not stain the tooth.

Where it fits

Earliest stage

A soft spot on the surface

The enamel has started to soften but the decay has not gone deep.

Fluoride at your cleaning and good brushing at home

Early cavity

Decay under an unbroken surface

The decay has gone deeper into the enamel, but the surface of the tooth has not broken.

This is where Curodont is used

Later stage

A cavity with a hole

Once the surface breaks, or the decay reaches deep into the tooth, the damaged part has to be removed.

A filling, not Curodont

Who it is for

Usually a good fit

  • Early cavities found at your exam or on X-rays, including between the teeth
  • Chalky white spots, including ones left behind after braces
  • Children and adults

Not a fit

  • A cavity that has already made a hole in the tooth
  • Decay that has reached deep into the tooth
  • A spot that already has a filling or crown on it

We decide from your exam and X-rays, and we show you what we are looking at.

What the visit is like

  1. Finding it early. Most early cavities show up at a routine checkup, on X-rays or as a chalky spot — one more reason the twice-a-year visit matters.
  2. Preparing the spot. We clean the tooth and prepare its surface so the liquid can soak in.
  3. Applying it. We apply Curodont and leave it to soak in for a few minutes. No numbing is needed, because nothing is drilled.
  4. Checking it later. We look at the spot again at your checkups, and on X-rays when they are due, to make sure it is holding.

What to know before you choose it

It does not work on every spot. It is a newer treatment, and not every early cavity responds to it. That is why we keep checking. If a spot keeps growing, a filling is still an option.

Usually it is a single application. Some spots need a second one at a later visit, and we will tell you if yours does.

It does not replace brushing and fluoride. Whatever started the cavity — sugar, plaque, a dry mouth — still needs dealing with, or new ones will start somewhere else.

Insurance often does not cover it yet. It is billed under a newer insurance code that many plans do not pay for. We are in-network with Delta Dental and file claims for every other plan, and we will check your benefits and tell you your cost before we start.

Ask about it at your next visit

If we find an early cavity, we will tell you whether Curodont is an option for that tooth. If you already know you have one, call and ask.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Drill-Free Cavity Treatment FAQ

No. There is no drilling and no needle, so no numbing is needed. We clean the tooth, prepare its surface and apply the liquid, then let it soak in for a few minutes. It has no taste.

Yes. It is used for children and adults. For a child, treating a first cavity without a drill or a needle can make the next dental visit easier too.

Only if the cavity is caught early, before the surface of the tooth breaks and before the decay goes deep. We decide that from your exam and X-rays. Even when a cavity qualifies, it does not work every time, so we check the spot again at your later visits. If it keeps growing, a filling is still an option.

No. Curodont treats early decay in natural enamel. It does not replace an existing filling, and it cannot rebuild a tooth that already has a hole.

Fluoride varnish works mainly at the surface of the enamel, which is why it suits the very earliest soft spots. Curodont is made to soak deeper, into the full depth of an early cavity, and it contains fluoride as well. Many patients have both: fluoride at their cleanings, and Curodont for a specific spot.

Sometimes, but often not yet. It is billed under a newer insurance code, and whether your plan pays depends on the plan. We are in-network with Delta Dental and file claims for every other plan as an out-of-network provider. We will check your benefits and tell you your cost before we start.
